The Weather
The weather in Britain is very mild. Differences between the seasons are not as extreme as in some countries. Temperatures vary from 5 to 15 degrees in the Winter and from 15 to 30 degrees in the Summer.

What to bring to London
London is an expensive city but you can buy lots of cheap household goods and cheap clothing in shops and in the markets. Check with the airline how much luggage you can bring and be careful – paying for excess baggage can be very expensive.

Electrical Equipment
Voltage in the UK is 240. If you bring equipment from home you will need an adaptor to use UK sockets (plugs have 3 square pins). Many students use personal computers at home. If you are thinking of buying a computer, it may be better to wait until you start your course to find out exactly what you need. You can ask IT staff and tutors on your course for advice.

Useful Items
  • Passport size photos – you will need these for your student ID card and student discount cards.
  • Favourite things. It is a good idea to bring a few things to remind you of home – for example photos of your family.
  • Alarm clock
  • Camera
  • Mobile phone
  • Adaptor for electrical equipment

Food
You may find British food strange but in London you can find food from all over the world. When you get here, speak to students from your country to find out where they buy supplies. It is quite easy to find food and ingredients for cooking from Russia, Poland, China, Japan and India in many parts of London.

Social Behaviour
Smoking: Smoking is banned in all public places and on public transport in the UK.

Drinking: There is a strong drinking culture in the UK. You must be 18 years old to drink alcohol in the UK. Many students go to pubs and bars and you may be surprised at how much alcohol many UK students drink. If you do not drink alcohol, you can still make friends in London by going to pubs anyway and drinking soft drinks.

Cost of Living

London is an expensive city. You should be prepared to pay for transport, food, telephone calls, stationery, social activities.

If you arrive for less then 14 weeks your transport expenses can be £20-£30 a week, students on longer courses are entitled to a 30% discount and apply for an Oyster card.

Food expenses can vary starting from £40 per week in a self-catering type of accommodation. It is possible to have lunch for £5 in a café or a coffee shop. A meal in a restaurant will cost approximately £10–£15.

Usually students pay for their accommodation in advance but it covers only the first 4 weeks, so you should be prepared to pay for your stay according to your choice (you may find more information in accommodation section).

Cinema tickets are about £7, theatre tickets – from £25, but students get discounts.

There are lots of museums which are free, such as National Gallery, British Museum, Tate Gallery, Greenwich Maritime Museum, Natural History Museum, etc., but other places have an admission fee varying from £7 to £17, (e.g. the admission fee to the Tower of London is £16.50 for adults and £ 9.50 for children under 15).

Religion
Britain is a multicultural society and London is one of the most diverse cities in the world. Britain is also a very secular society and only a small number of people now attend a church of any kind. However, you will be able to find churches for most main religions in London. The school can help you to do this.
